Connect Gmail with an app password
Why Gmail needs an app password and what to check before connecting it to Space Cake.
Gmail usually does not allow normal password sign-in from outside apps. Instead, it uses an app password.
What an app password is
An app password is a separate password created inside your Google account. You use it only for Space Cake. Your normal Gmail password stays private.
Before you try
Make sure 2-step verification is switched on for the Google account. Google only shows app passwords after that security setting is enabled.
Some Google accounts cannot create app passwords. This can happen when:
- the account is managed by an organisation
- the admin has blocked app passwords
- the account has security settings Google does not allow with app passwords
If Google does not offer app passwords for your account, Space Cake cannot connect that Gmail inbox yet.
When you connect
Use your full Gmail address and the app password, not your normal Gmail password.
If the connection fails, create a fresh app password and try once more. If it still fails, check whether Google has blocked app passwords for that account.
Still stuck? Browse the help centre or get in touch from inside the app.
