Fix a failed inbox connection
The common reasons an inbox connection fails and what to try next.
Most inbox connection failures are caused by the email provider refusing the login. The mailbox is usually fine; the provider just needs a different sign-in method.
Check the provider
First, check whether your provider is supported. Some providers need an app password, and Microsoft or Outlook accounts are not available yet.
If the provider is not available, changing the password will not fix it.
Check the password type
For Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud, use an app password. Do not use your normal mailbox password.
For GMX, mail.com, and many custom-domain mailboxes, the normal mailbox password often works.
Check for security blocks
Some providers block repeated connection attempts. If you have tried several times, wait a little before trying again.
Also check whether the provider sent you a security email asking you to confirm the sign-in.
If you are using a custom-domain mailbox
Make sure the mailbox itself is active and can send and receive mail. If it was set up by a web host, check the email settings in your hosting control panel.
If you are unsure, ask your hosting provider for the mailbox’s IMAP and SMTP settings.
